Final Fantasy XIV Returns To Paid Subscription Format On January 6th 2012

Are you going to be paying for this?

Square Enix has sent an e-mail to all previous subscribers to Final Fantasy XIV, the MMORPG that fell flat on its face since it’s debut a year ago. As SE attempts to revitalize the MMORPG with its Version 2.0 release way later in 2012, the transition period from here to then will still see significant changes. As such, SE feels that it is time to ask the players who are left in the world of Eorzea to pay for their time. Start on January 6th 20 12, Final Fantasy XIV will revert back to a paid subscription plan and will require a monthly payment in order to access the game. Those who may have setup a subscription back in 2010 and have already given up on the game will not need to worry as everyone who still wants to play will need to log back into their accounts and adjust their payment settings accordingly. Players can start doing this starting December 16th 2011.

We’ve ran through several articles in The Mog Blog about Final Fantasy XIV, such as Lissy’s thoughts after one year of service and my thoughts on the people who are still playing this game. It’s hard for me to really recommend that now would be a good time to start charging customers but it also needed to happen at some point. I just hope that with January 6th coming a month, SE would have released a major patch that would further increase the longevity of the game and entice enough people to want to stick around.

Because I know I didn’t. No amount of gil is going to bring me back to the game until Version 2.0, and that’s a maybe.
