Evolution Championship Series 2012 Will Adopt 2on2 Ruleset for Street Fighter X Tekken

In an interesting twist, Evolution, the internationally renowned fighting game tournament, will pit two players against two other players in a two-on-two tag team battle for Street Fighter X Tekken. Given the hype that 2on2 has generated in several tournaments since release, the format will definitely be a switch up as now teamwork will be a deciding factor to winning the pot.

Note that this is not the “scramble mode” that has all four players on screen at the same time. The level of coordination will be important as both players will not only be able to bring in their own best character but will essentially have virtual bench in which the partner character will be able to sit back a bit and analyze the opposing team. It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of this as this has me genuinely more excited about SFxT in a tournament setting.

There will also be no gems used this tournament. It’s understandable considering the setup time but it’s a shame that due to the prestige of Evolution, most tournaments will most likely follow suit. Perhaps it was a damned idea from the woodshed but the poorly implemented user interface for it has been drawing a lot of criticism long before release.
